A Word on Relationships.

I was chatting with one of my best friends the other day and we started talking about relationships. Hers. Mine. And just in general.

When I was younger, I had this idea that when you fall in love everything is perfect all of the time. I think most people in real relationships can confirm that this is simply not the case. Relationships are hard work. People aren't perfect. And it's silly to expect someone else to be perfect when we ourselves are imperfect. No one is happy go lucky every second of every day. People have bad days.

My sister and I joke about what my mom has told me countless times. It goes something like this: "Love and life and marriage aren't a fairy tale everyday. No one wakes up head over heels in love every single day of their life for their entire life. You just have to do the best you can with the person you love."

That being said, I am lucky to have TG. We love each other. But nothing is perfect. I don't want it to ever seem that way. In fact, I find it a little irritating when I read blogs where it's all rainbows and daisies and hearts all the time. Of course, we have arguments. Of course, I can be difficult. Of course, we can get on each other's nerves. But we forgive each other. I think that's what is important.

Relationships are full of ups and downs. Peaks and valleys. I saw this quote recently and I thought it was pretty perfect.

"In my opinion, the best thing you can do is to find a person who loves you for exactly who you are. Good mood, bad mood, ugly, pretty, handsome, what have you, the right person will still think the sun shines out your ass. That's the kind of person worth sticking with"

Weekend Update

This weekend was a lazy one. TG has had a crazy work schedule lately so we have just been lounging and what not.

Last week, I found a campaign dresser on Craig's list for $50. I have seen some pretty amazing campaign dresser transformations, so I was keeping an eye out for one of my own. TG wasn't exactly onboard with me crashing his Sunday to drive out to the suburbs to pickup a dresser. There was a Bears game in Chicago so the traffic was crazy too. With some whining and pouting, I convinced him to help me go get it.

All it needs is a fresh coat of paint. I have to replace all of the brass pieces too--the ones on this dresser are pretty dingy. I'm hoping make mine look as great as these do.

The last picture is from Jessie's dresser re-vamp. (p.s. Jessie is somewhat of the Craig's List Queen-- Check out her blog! )

Can't wait to post pictures of the finished product : )

Friday Miscellany!

  • This past Wednesday night, I had my first blog-buddy-date. Tess and I have been reading each other's blogs for a while now. We certainly share a love for Chicago..among other things! I was a little nervous as I cabbed it over to Rock It. Once I sat down and ordered a glass of wine, we started talking like we had known each other for years. Our happy hour meet up turned into a long dinner with plenty of wine. Tess is a doll. If you aren't reading her blog, you should head on over! I'm so grateful for blogging and my first Chicago friend!
  • My Missoni for Target package came a couple of days ago. I ordered a melamine tray and two pairs of the chevron flats (one for me (7.5) and one for my sweet sister(7)). I really like the tray but haven't decided where I will use it yet. I was a little disappointed with the flats. I usually am a pretty standard size 7.5. The 7.5 was HUGE on me. The size 7 were even a little loose on me so I knew they wouldn't fit Sydney. I was also a little disappointed in the quality. I know it's Target but they are a little flimsy. Anyways, I took the 7.5 back and got these black patent flats. Shasta Anne and Annie like them too : )

  • The other day while walking down State street, I walked over a wind grate. I totally had a Marilyn Monroe moment as I swatted my skirt down. The people around me definitely saw my blue hanky pankies. Oopsy.
  • It's no secret that I love television. Have you enjoyed the season premieres this week? I have quite the tv schedule this fall. Modern Family, The Office, & Parks and Recreation are some of my favorites. Has anyone seen Up All Night? Whitney? 2 Broke Girls? I'm trying to decide if I will watch those.
  • I found a campaign dresser that I'm going to pick up this weekend. TG and I are going to paint it and refresh the hardware so I will have a new dresser. Pretty excited. I'm thinking I want to do something like this.
  • TG has been such a saint lately. Putting things together for me, accompanying me on Target trips, and fixing the toilet after I broke it. Not what you think. I'm trying to think of something special to do for him.
  • My Erin Condren planner came last week and I love it. I won't bore you with pictures of my planner because I know everyone has seen it on some blog or another. It's totally worth the $50. Plus, it has tabs, pockets, and fun stickers.
  • Lastly, I stumbled upon this artist/blogger/designer the other day. I'm trying to figure out which of her paintings I would like to order. I may just get her to do something custom to match our living room. Or maybe this one for our bedroom?
  • Check her out. Cocoa and Hearts. I'm completely obsessed.
Happy Friday! : )

A Word about Chicago

I feel so blessed to live in such an amazing city. It's no secret that I'm obsessed with this town.

Upon leaving the South, I thought I would miss the "southern hospitality", yes sir/yes ma'am, sweet tea way of life. Although I do miss sweet tea and Duke's mayonnaise, I have found comfort and ease in being in a big city in the Midwest.

Prior to moving here, I had heard people say that Chicagoans were really nice people. Moving to a big city, I expected to encounter some rude and unfriendly people. I've had several encounters with not-so-nice people in New York and Boston. I mean, obviously, there are rude and mean people in every city in the world.

But I must say, so far I have been pleasantly surprised. I said to TG yesterday: People are so stinking kind here. I sneezed walking down the street and had three people bless me!

The other day at the L station, I must have looked confused. A man walked right over to me, asked if I needed help, and pointed me in the right direction.

I'm just saying-- A little kindness goes a long way. And there is definitely Midwestern Hospitality too.

Fall Wish List

The fall weather is well on it's way to Chicago. I'm excited to finally be able to wear my fall/winter clothes that I missed out on wearing last year. It rarely felt appropriate to wear tights and boots in Florida. I've been thinking about several items I'd like to add to my closet. I'm still searching for the perfect winter coat. I'm a very cold natured person. Seriously. When I go to the movie theater, I rarely look cute or presentable because I'm so bundled up. It's always arctic in the theater.

I'm hoping to find several cotton dresses to wear with leggings and boots. I have a feeling it will be all about comfort and warmth this winter. I'm on the search for some basic cotton dresses (long sleeve/turtleneck). I welcome any and all suggestions blog friends : )

Here are a few things I'm thinking about adding to my closet this fall:

Good news

I finally started watching the Rachel Zoe Project.

...and I love it.

I know, I know. I'm a little late to the party. But a little more than excited for a marathon of the past seasons to go down in my living room.

In other (good) news, I won a giveaway on How I Met Your Father! TG is the proud new owner of a Smathers and Branson credit card wallet. I chose the trout because Mr. TG likes to fly fish.
We felt the first signs of Fall yesterday. I'm starting to get really nervous about Winter. I need to get some serious Winter weather gear. If you live in a cold place, what kinds of gear do you recommend? I mean, of course we have cold weather in NC but my last Winter was in Florida (also known as the surface of the sun).

That's all for now. I haven't felt the urge to blog much lately. I really want to get back on board but I have kind of been in a blogging rut. Do you ever feel like that?
